It all started in my Grandmothers kitchen!

My Grandmother, Helen Jay, baked cakes out of her farmhouse for over 40 years! Growing up, my fondest childhood memory was walking into her house and the smell of cake filling the air. I spent countless hours watching her bake and decorate cakes. When I was finally big enough to stand up to the counter and hold a decorating knife, I was allowed to help decorate the cakes too. This is when I fell in love with the abilities that my grandmother had. As the years had passed I would help her, learning more and more every day.

When I was 13 everything changed and my grandmother passed away. I had lost my greatest inspiration and I couldn’t bear the thought of her cakes going unmade. I started right then baking and decorating cakes of my own, as I knew all of her famous recipes. I was not overly talented when I first started, but with the support of the community, friends, and family I was able to continue “Jay Cakes” throughout high school.

All along I said that I would never do this for my career, but as the years passed I realized that I couldn’t imagine my life doing anything else. After graduating high school, I was accepted into the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in New York. I studied everything from fine chocolates to Artisan breads. After my freshman year, I took an externship to be a pastry cook at the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina. Here I worked to help prepare desserts for weddings and banquets.

In 2017, I was presented with an opportunity of a lifetime to open my own storefront bakery in Bedford, my hometown! This opportunity allowed me to do everything I ever wanted and continue my grandmother’s legacy of delicious and beautifully decorated cakes. With the help of my mom, Tammy Jay, I was able to turn my dream into a reality; and when I say “help”, I really mean she turned this old hardware store, turned art studio into a cozy bakery with an amazing kitchen all from scratch! My dream of a bakery would not have been realized without the blood, sweat, and tears of my mom.

Whipped Bakery opened June 1, 2018, and it was the sweetest day of my entire life! Friends, family, and the Bedford community lined up outside for our 6 am grand opening eagerly waiting for us to open the doors. That morning every single item in the store was completely sold out before 9am! Since then, I have been in love with my job, my talent has grown, and to this day I still feel the same support from this wonderful community that I felt that day.

People always stop by the bakery and reminisce about the Famous Helen Jay Cakes and I love hearing their stories.
